Racing the Iron Girl Triathlon to honor Iron Women!

I was honored to compete in my first Iron Girl Triathlon in August 2008 and witnessed first-hand thousands of women – of all ages, shapes, and sizes – competing in the most supportive and encouraging race environment I’ve ever experienced! My Mom, Judy, was there that day and can also speak to the incredible energy and enthusiasm that filled the air on race-day. She was so inspired that she has decided to participate in the Iron Girl Triathlon with me this year on August 23, 2009!! My Mom and I have decided to race the 2009 Iron Girl Triathlon in honor of our family and friends whose lives have been changed by a diagnosis of breast and/or ovarian cancer. We will be raising money for The National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NBOCC) as a way to honor the following individuals: The SWIM leg of the race will be dedicated to aunt/sister-in-law, Cindy Wood. Cindy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. The BIKE leg of the race will be dedicated to our friend and my co-worker, Ginny Corson. Ginny was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2002. The RUN leg of the race will be dedicated to aunt/sister-in-law, Sunny Benitez-Rush. Sunny was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997. All three of these women are an inspiration to us! They have faced their surgeries, chemotherapy treatments, radiation treatments, recurrences, and so much more with strength, wisdom, and grace. To us they are the true definition of Iron Women!! Unfortunately, almost everyone knows a woman whose life has been changed by a diagnosis of breast and/or ovarian cancer. The NBOCC strives to raise awareness and educate the general public about breast and ovarian cancer (www.nbocc.org). We think that the Iron Girl Triathlon and NBOCC are a perfect fit…they both want to empower women to live full, healthy, wonderful lives!
